DJ Avicii has fans jumping for 'big, melodic' joy

When he plays 'Le7els,' the American crowd "goes completely mental," Avicii says.

Many songs put a smile on your face, but few compel you to jump out of your seat and flail wildly. DJ Avicii's Le7els is the latter kind of tune, and it has brought this week's On the Verge artist's music career to a higher level.

Pronounced success: The joyous single Le7els (pronounced "Levels") went No. 1 on USA TODAY's dance/club chart and sold 250,000 downloads, and the companion video has 13 million YouTube views.

Computer composer: Avicii, 22, born Tim Bergling in Sweden, was always interested in creating music, but had "never played an instrument (well)," he says. When Avicii learned he could compose music from a computer, he took to mastering the art of song production. Several YouTube tutorials later, and the artist who also goes by Tim Berg (for "more experimental, underground" music) was sharing original songs with friends, blogs and the electronic dance music site Beatport by his 18th birthday.

Avicii is born: Avici "means the lowest level of hell, it's just cool," says Avicii, who added the extra "i" to distinguish himself from a different Avici on MySpace. Avicii's "big, melodic" brand of house music has a core of catchy, repetitive tunes, like those in Le7elsand Penguin (which became Fade Into Darkness with the addition of vocals by Andreas Moe).

It starts at the piano bench: To develop most of his musical phrases, "I sit at the piano and start playing around," Avicii says. Then he uses his computer to re-create and compose around his winning piano melody. That was the process for Le7els, a song that samples Etta James' Something's Got a Hold on Me. Rapper Flo Rida uses Avicii's sample in his song Good Feeling, which is No. 4 on USA TODAY's top 40 airplay chart.

Penguin problem: For Penguin, Avicii's melody was inspired by a Penguin Café Orchestra song he heard in the movie Mary and Max. "I just thought it would be amazing to take (Perpetuum Mobile) and change the rhythm." Leona Lewis apparently thought so, too, as Avicii's melody is included in her song Collide. That became the source of a legal battle that has since been settled between the two artists' labels.

Moving on up: Avicii arrived on the American dance scene when he played a small stage at the 2010 Ultra Music Festival in Miami, the same year his song Street Dancer was No. 1 on Beatport. Last November, he signed with Interscope/Atom Empire, and now he's up for a Grammy with David Guetta (for best dance recording, Sunshine) and preparing to headline Ultra in March.

"(Headlining) is lot of pressure, because I haven't been (performing) for that long," says Avicii, who went from touring U.S. clubs with a couple hundred people in early 2011 to playing solo shows for thousands today. He says the recent EDM boom in America is a major factor in his success. "Everything's been growing so fast."

Americans love him: "In Europe, they don't go as crazy as they do here," Avicii says of U.S. audiences. "Here, they have glowsticks and straight-up energy. … People have my name tattooed." When Avicii plays Le7els, the American crowd "goes completely mental," he says.

Reciprocating the love: Avicii's January House for Hunger tour supports hunger relief charity Feeding America. "I feel so fortunate to be in a position where I can actually give something back," says Avicii, who is traveling by tour bus instead of plane to cut costs and hit his goal of a $1 million donation.

Jumping for joy: Avicii rarely takes a break from making music and performing — while vacationing in theCanary Islands last year, he still had two shows — but he loves what he does. "There's no better feeling than when you get that instant response from so many people (at a show)," he says. Especially in America, where "people aren't (just) dancing — they're jumping."

USB Tie Fan Cooler….Thing

Feel like you're tied to your desk all day and looking for the ultimate way to cool off? Look no further, all you need is theUSB tie cooler from Thanko. Somewhat resembling the collar-bombs worn by imprisoned schoolchildren in the 2002 film Battle Royale, the fan clips to your neck and is then covered up with the included silk tie.

CRAP USB GADGETS

Of course, it's USB powered – so it's completely useless (yet still too embarassing to take off) unless you're near a computer. Once you finally do get to your desk, find a spare USB port (by removing non-essentials like mice and keyboards) and you'll be the coolest cat in the office.

That is until you suddenly get up to tell Brenda you need that report by 5, tearing your laptop off the table, showering your co-workers with coffee and publicly revealing the secret to your body temperature regulation. Still, at least you won't be hot under the collar?

Chicken's Foot 2GB USB Stick

There are a lot of overpriced USB sticks on the market in all kinds of novelty shapes, capacities and sizes but most of them have a valid use – removable storage – that makes up for it. I am actually having trouble with this particular USBflash drive however, as it appears to be in the shape of a chicken's foot.

STUPID USB GADGET

This of course means that the bloody thing will never fit comfortably in your pocket, and might also have trouble fitting into computers mounted on a flat surface (I do believe the toes would get in the way).

This rather small 2GB capacity appendage will sit on your desk for hours without falling over – though you're probably better off spending the $30 on more space, rather than novelty form factor.

USB Mini UV Toothbrush Sanitiser

Nothing says "pearly whites" like a sterile toothbrush (I guess?) and now you can sterilise yours right at your desk! Excited? Well hold on junior, because there might just be a teency weency issue with aforementioned USB toothbrush sanitiser… and that'll be the USB part.

Who keeps their toothbrush at their desk? Moreover, who would take it out and actually sanitise it using this bloody thing? If toothbrush sanitation is high on your list of priorities then I don't think a mini USB toothbrush sanitiser is going to cut it – you'll want the real deal.

Thus I conclude there's probably not much of a market for semi-dedicated toothbrush sanitisers who stow their oral cleaning contraptions in the office. Next.

USB Flower Pot Speaker

Introducing the USB Flower Pot Speaker – because there's simply too much space on your desk! Or should that be Flower Pod Speaker, as the manufacturers have cleverly coined it? Regardless, not only does it require full use of a USB port for power but it also isn't a real flower pot (which is a real shame).

STUPID USB GADGET

Don't try to water, plant or re-pot your new musical chum for he's a static, lifeless plastic disappointment who produces no more than 2W RMS at the best of times. Maybe spend the money on some real speakers and a real plant instead…

USB Eye Massager

Unfortunately this isn't a case of affixing the wrong photograph to the wrong product description, but a genuine product that is designed with an eye massage in mind. If you've not already peeked at the image below then now is the time – just look at it…

Conclusion

It's not too late for new year resolutions, and here's an easy one we can all stick to : in addition to the products on this list, don't buy cheap useless USB crap. It might seem like a funny gift and even provide 5 minutes of laughter but will ultimately end up in a landfill as wasted money, time, energy and resources.

HP makes its webOS, "Open Source" platform

Hewlett-Packard on Friday announced that is is contributing its webOS platform to the open source software community. The company confirmed that it would not build any new webOS hardware for the time being, though it said it would continue to actively develop and support the operating system. "WebOS is the only platform designed from the ground up to be mobile, cloud-connected and scalable," said HP CEO Meg Whitman in a statement. "By contributing this innovation, HP unleashes the creativity of the open source community to advance a new generation of applications and devices." HP announced in August that it was discontinuing its webOS hardware efforts and now, more than three months later, the company has finally decided the fate of the platform. HP took ownership of webOS as part of its $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm in July 2010. The company's full press release follows below.

webOS offers a number of benefits to the entire ecosystem of web applications. For developers, applications can be easily built using standard web technologies. In addition, its single integrated stack offers multiplatform portability. For device manufacturers, it provides a single web-centric platform to run across multiple devices. As a result, the end user benefits from a fast, immersive user experience.

"webOS is the only platform designed from the ground up to be mobile, cloud-connected and scalable," said Meg Whitman, HP president and chief executive officer. "By contributing this innovation, HP unleashes the creativity of the open source community to advance a new generation of applications and devices."

HP will make the underlying code of webOS available under an open source license. Developers, partners, HP engineers and other hardware manufacturers can deliver ongoing enhancements and new versions into the marketplace.

HP will engage the open source community to help define the charter of the open source project under a set of operating principles:

The goal of the project is to accelerate the open development of the webOS platform
HP will be an active participant and investor in the project
Good, transparent and inclusive governance to avoid fragmentation
Software will be provided as a pure open source project
HP also will contribute ENYO, the application framework for webOS, to the community in the near future along with a plan for the remaining components of the user space.

Exclusive: First Image of BlackBerry Milan - next generation BlackBerry 10 slider!!

Well that didn't take long. Last week we posted our BBX (now BlackBerry 10) Roadmap Preview for 2012, where we dropped a number of new codenames into the mix beyond the already photographed BlackBerry London. Lisbon, Nevada and Milan were among the codenames of upcoming QNX-based phones mentioned, but the details we're still pretty slim.

With the first image of BlackBerry Milan above, things are getting more clear for the next generation of BlackBerry 10 phones. While we don't have any specs just yet for Milan, the photo above says a lot. It's a slider BlackBerry, featuring the physical full qwerty keyboard that BlackBerry addicts know and love. And I'm hearing all of these next generation BlackBerry devices sport amazing displays (higher pixel density than the iPhone 4's retina display), which will really add to the sex appeal here. It's interesting to note that the design on this one seems to merge together two looks: at the top are rounded corners, similar to the BlackBerry PlayBook tablet, while along the bottom we have the sharper edges simliar to the photo of BlackBerry London. There's still time for RIM to tweak things up before locking down final hardware design for manufacturing so I'll be curious to see if things change up from here at all by the time we get this phone in our hands.

This image also gives us a big hint as to how the traditional BlackBerry experience will evolve on BlackBerry 10. Gone is the optical trackpad, call, hang-up and menu and back buttons from the main navigation area of the phone (where the BlackBerry logo is in this image). This means we can assume a much more PlayBook like experience moving forward, even on BlackBerry 10 phones that have a full qwerty. Expect a lot of bezel gestures! Just looking at the phone you know some of that one-handed ease of use of the traditional BlackBerry experience will be sacrificed here, but I don't think many people will care about that given how much more modern and intuitive the touchscreen user interface will be.

Overall, pretty damn exciting. A full, BIG touchscreen along with a physical. keyboard on the next-generation BlackBerry 10 OS could be the ultimate phone for a LOT of people out there in 2012. Keep it locked to CrackBerry for. more info as we get it!

HP to decide fate of webOS within two weeks

Hewlett-Packard's webOS hardware is dead and buried but the fate of the platform itself remains to be determined. HP may hold on to the OS and use it on printers and PCs, and there have been plenty of rumors surrounding talks the company is having in an effort to license the platform to other firms. According to an interview in French newspaper Le Figaro, HP CEO Meg Whitman has gone on record in stating that a decision regarding the fate of webOS will be made within two weeks. HP took possession of webOS when it acquired Palm for $1.2 billion in 2010, and that buy yielded one failed tablet that was discontinued shortly after launching, three failed smartphones and soon, perhaps, the death of webOS itself. The promising mobile platform BGR once heralded as a breath of fresh air in an otherwise stagnant smartphone market now finds itself an afterthought in a space dominated by two major players: Apple and Google. As RIM prepares a fresh new OS in an attempt to regain momentum and Microsoft's Windows Phone platform looks ready to take off, HP and any potential webOS licensees certainly have their work cut out for them.

RIM's new operating system, however, is a different beast. It's more powerful and it is certainly capable, but it also looks like it's been hacked, broken into, and manipulated by a few individuals who have demonstrated that they have access to something that no one outside of RIM has ever had access to.

Guess what operating system RIM's BlackBerry smartphones are going to run? The same one that was jailbroken, opening up the possibility that forthcoming smartphones and tablets from Research In Motion will be subject to the same cat and mouse game that jailbreakers play with Apple. This means that the security of a BlackBerry will not ever be the same as long as someone out there is able to exploit a vulnerability in RIM's BBX operating system, and as far as I know, apps aren't sandboxed at all like they are on iOS. Not all apps are encrypted (aside from what, Password Keeper?), so once you root the device, you have access to all of the data on that BlackBerry product — a concept that enterprise and government BlackBerry clients will not be happy about. In fact, I'd venture on to say that this is probably the biggest threat to RIM right now if this turns out to be true. For RIM's enterprise and government customers to be thinking about the fact that the upcoming phones and devices could be unsecure, is a big, big deal

Popular New York nightlife promoter Rocco Ancarola underwent emergency heart surgery after suffering a suspected aortic aneurysm on Wednesday night at Midtown hotspot Lavo, where he throws weekly parties. We're told Rocco, 54, the famed Pink Elephant impresario, had just arrived at Lavo with friends when he began to feel unwell.

He insisted on going home, but was persuaded the next day by pals to skip Thanksgiving dinner and go to a hospital in Newark, where he had the surgery. Friends tell us Rocco was in stable condition last night in a medically induced coma and is expected to recover. Our thoughts are with you, Rocco.

Could it be that Apple's latest smartphone is plagued with a troubling design flaw? Just ask the handful of iPhone 4S users who've experienced issues with their SIM cards, and they'll tell you this is very much the case. While we have no reason to believe a majority of iPhone 4S owners are affected, the problem appears to span across numerous carriers and parts of the globe -- even Sprint and Verizon Wirelessusers aren't immune. Some report resolving the problem with a new SIM card, while others have reason to believe it's the reader itself. Then there's a group known as Woo Servers, which suggests the malfunction is related to a short circuit caused by a design flaw with the SIM card tray. They've provided a detailed list of instructions to remedy the problem, with a simple piece of tape as the cure. Sadly, not everyone seems to benefit from the advice. So, Cupertino, care to lend a hand?

It looks like you can put any any fears of the short-lived Gmail iOS app going the way of the BlackBerry app to rest. Google has just announced that the app has returned to Apple's App Store, and it promises that the problematic bugs that plagued the original release have been fixed.

The company also says that it has "received a lot of helpful feedback and feature requests" during the app's two-week absence, and further notes that it's "just getting started" with the iOS app and plans to rapidly add a number of new features including support for multiple accounts and improved notifications.

A music store isn't much without plenty of music, and Google's new offering launched with some big backing today. The company is partnering with Universal, EMI, Sony Music and no less than 23 independent labels on the service -- according to Google, that covers about 13 million songs in total, 8 million of which are available today.

Speaking at the launch event, Universal's Rob Wells said that he expects Google Music to be a "rich new revenue stream for our artists," and further noted that he's excited about the "global rollout" across all Android devices, although we're unfortunately not hearing many specifics about availability outside the US just yet.

What's more, Google also announced that Google Music will have a number of exclusive offerings from the labels, including concerts from the likes of The Rolling Stones, Coldplay, Pearl Jam and The Dave Matthews Band, and the exclusive debut of Busta Rhymes' latest album.

BlackBerry design chief says 2012 phones will be 'charming, whimsical and fun'

Todd Wood, RIM's senior vice president of industrial design has teased next year's BlackBerry handsets, describing them as "charming, whimsical and fun." Admittedly, those last two words aren't closely associated with BB devices of the past, but the manufacture will certainly be on the charm offensive after those service outages last month.

In an interview with Pocket-Lint, the Wood explained how this year's range was influenced by Bellagio in Italy. This is apparently inspired the style licks -- like the 'fretted' keyboard -- on phones like the Bold 9930 and the barely-announced Bold 9790.

Next year's models, presumably arriving with a software refresh in the form of BBX, will be drawn from ideas at a design workshop held in Malmo, Sweden. While we can't imagine seeing a Nordic wood-encased Bold, nor the disappearance of RIM's talismanic keyboard, hopefully the change in design focus will bring a bit of texture and spice to BB's next roll

RIM unveils BlackBerry Bold 9790, Curve 9380, hitting the market within weeks

Now that we've seen all the leaks and heard all the rumors, RIM has finally announced the BlackBerry Bold 9790 and Curve 9380, welcoming two new members to the OS 7 family. Picking up where the Bold 9780 left off, the comparatively higher-end 9790 boasts a 2.44-inch touchscreen display with 360 x 480 resolution, and is powered by a 1GHz CPU. The QWERTY-equipped handset also ships with 8GB of onboard memory and features a microSD slot that offers up to 32GB of additional space.

The Curve 9380, meanwhile, is an all touchscreen affair, with a 3.2-inch, 480 x 360 display and a five megapixel camera. RIM hasn't offered any other details on the 9380's specs, though the company did specify that both devices will offer NFC and augmented reality support, and will come pre-loaded with BlackBerry Messenger, Documents To Go Premium, and BlackBerry Protect. No word yet on pricing or availability, though RIM says to expect a launch "over the coming weeks."

Fatal shooting and others injured at Juliet Supper Club

As I updated my Twitter timeline around 3:30am this morning, I noticed several alarming tweets about a fatal shooting that occurred at a popular New York, "hot spot" JULIET Supper Club in Chelsea. From what I've gathered as of 7am from tweets and breaking news is that a person fired several shots fatally injuring 1 club patron and seriously injuring others.

Reports are still unclear if there is a suspect in custody, the condition of those injured or what prompted the shoot out in the first place. However, 1 patron known as @Sexccladii by her Twitter name was shot but was fortunate not to sustain any serious injury.

Despite her traumatic experience, she's posted a "twitpic" of her leg injury which has prompted nearly 7k views in 4hrs as news of this shooting began spreading like wildfire amongst New Yorks nightlife scene. She's been tweeting throughout the ordeal and appears to be the only witness or patron to do so.

No official news reports yet, but according to Twitter and a victim who was shot, a shooting at Juliet Supper Club in NYC has left five people wounded and one dead. This is not a good look for Juliet after a 23-year-old was stabbed to death outside the club this past September. Surprisingly, one of the victims from tonight's shooting has been tweeting about what happened.

If the above image is to be trusted, what you spy with your little eye may be the very first BlackBerry smartphone to sport RIM's QNX-based operating system, known more recently as BBX. With bold angular lines that smack heavily of the P'9981, this touchscreen slab (code-named "London") is said to be thinner than the iPhone 4 and will dutifully stand tall when placed on its side.

Before you get too excited, however, keep in mind that the above image could very well be a concept, prototype -- or, even a masterful forgery. For what it's worth, The Verge was informed that this model is merely a dummy unit, although the actual device is alleged to contain a 1.5GHz dual-core TI OMAP processor with 1GB of RAM and 16GB of on-board storage. An 8-megapixel rear camera is also said to be in the mix, along with a 2-megapixel front-facing shooter and a June 2012 release date.

Sure, it's easy to be excited about Waterloo's forthcoming wares, but sadly we're forced to take this one with a heapin' spoonful of skepticism. So, who's hoping Mr. London becomes a reality?

If you're in search of a venue a bit dissimilar to the customary New York City hotel scene, we've got the spot for you. The Grace Hotel, located in Times Square, has done a reputable job at staying under the radar. The feature that separates this venue from other NYC hotels and has us boasting is its 22-foot heated indoor pool with a swim-up bar.

This isn't a conventional indoor pool for families with kids, however, it's bordered by stadium seating accompanied by tables, which offer the option for bottle service. Where there's a pool, there are bathing suits. If you're not interested in getting wet, you can always sit and watch. However, if you're willing to try something new and get a little wet while at a bar we can guarantee you'll be surrounded by hot men and women.

In case you forget your bathing suit, the venue sells disposable suits outside of the pool entrance. However, we did see women get in the pool in their under garments. To go along with the nightlife vibe, there is a projection screen above the swim-up bar which coincides with the live DJ the hotel provides five nights a week.

At the swim-up bar, pool inhabitants can see through the bar to the opposite side of the inside bar. However, seeing as though the bar goes through, the bartenders must attend to the inside guests as well as the pool guests.

Halfway throughout the night the venue supplies the pool with numerous blow up balls. Just when you thought things were getting hot and heavy, venture to the third floor of the indoor pool-room and you'll find showers, a sauna and a steam room. It seems as though this venue thought of it all.

The Grace Hotel is in a great location. It has a feature that no other hotel in NYC offers, and we recommend this venue to anyone who is up for a wet and wild experience not easily found in NYC.

RIM kicked off its BlackBerry World event in Orlando, Florida by launching the not-so-secret BlackBerry Bold 9900/9930 models, also dubbed "Bold Touch."

While the devices don't noticeably stray from RIM's design choices from the past decade -- they're instantly recognizable as QWERTY keyboard BlackBerrys -- the 9900 and 9300 pack some impressive guts. While the 2.8-inch VGA touchscreens won't impress many in today's world of 4-inch screens, but the devices are RIM's thinnest yet at 10.5mm.

A quick note: the devices are differentiated primarily by the cellular networks that they support. The 9900 will run 4G via HSPA+ connectivity, while the 9930 is RIM's world version with dual-band CDMA and quad-band GSM. Both devices get a blazing fast 1.2GHz Snapdragon processor, a five megapixel camera that can shoot 720p video, NFC (near-field communication) capability, 8 gigabytes of onboard storage and the usual mix of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

When launched this summer, both will be running the brand new BlackBerry OS 7, which promises a faster browser and improved user experiences.

An image circulating on the Internet and displayed on some television news programs abroad purports to show Osama bin Laden's bloody corpse. No U.S. or Pakistani officials have confirmed its authenticity, and two U.S. officials have warned NBC News that the image is a hoax.

Based on an initial look into the image file, we agree, and think it's a fake. At first glance, the pixelation around the "wound" area and the odd lack of transition between different colored cloth and flesh indicate that the image has been manipulated.

Furthermore, the facial expression and beard are very reminiscent of a 1998 image of bin Laden, the first picture shown below. Next to it, we show the original resolution of the "corpse" image as we've seen it (197 by 263 pixels), "flopped" 180 degrees on the horizontal axis to conform to the original 1998 image's beard orientation. The third image is a blended image of the two, with the "corpse" image at 100 percent opacity below the original image at 43 percent opacity. The way the images "lock" in place at the mouth, beard and nose indicate to us that the image circulating on the Web and some foreign television outlets is nothing but a clumsy fake:

Sohaib Athar, a resident of Abbottabad, Pakistan, spent Sunday's wee hours tweeting about helicopters circling overhead and a mysterious blast. Little did he imagine that he was recording America's attack on the world's most wanted terrorist.

On his Twitter page, Sohaib Athar (@ReallyVirtual) describes himself as "an IT consultant taking a break from the rat-race by hiding in the mountains with his laptops." But this weekend, he found himself at the center of the action. At about 1am local time on Sunday, Athar tweeted about a "helicopter hovering above Abbottabad (a rare event)," later joking that he might have to make use of his "giant swatter."

As U.S. operatives captured and killed the long-fugitive leader of al-Qaeda in a short-lived firefight, Athar wrote of a "window-shaking bang" and the power outages that followed. "Funny," he tweets, "moving to Abbottabad was supposed to be part of the 'being safe' strategy." He would go on to detail the crash of one helicopter engaged in the raid, speculating that it might be a drone or a UFO and relaying reports that it was shot down "near the Bilal Town area." In actuality, the U.S. military aircraft went down due to a mechanical failure.

Later, our unsuspecting witness catches wind of the news that all the noise wasn't for nothing. "Uh oh, now I'm the guy who liveblogged the Osama raid without knowing it," he finally recognizes. "And here come the mails from the mainstream media… *sigh*." So much for achieving anonymity in the mountains.

DJ AM found dead in NYC apt today

Law enforcement sources tell us DJ AM -- also known as Adam Goldstein -- was found dead this afternoon in New York City. Sources tell us he was found in his apartment at around 5:20 PM. We're told drug paraphernalia was found at the scene. We're told DJ AM had not been seen or heard from for a few days -- one of his friends went to check on him, but got no response after knocking on his apartment door. We're told the friend called the police, who broke down the door and then found DJ AM's body. Back in September of 2008, DJ AM and Travis Barker survived a plane crash in South Carolina. Four people died in the crash -- which was caused when the airplane aborted takeoff and then ran off the runway. DJ AM and Barker were the only survivors. Story developing...

Twitter and Facebook DDoS Attacks Targeted One Man

Did Twitter, Facebook, LiveJournal, YouTube, Google Sites and Google's Blogger all get attacked yesterday to silence one man? According to the testimony of a Facebook executive, they did.

A blogger in the Republic of Georgia with the username Cyxymu was the victim, according to Facebook's chief security officer Max Kelly. The claims cement earlier reports that social networking sites have been dragged into the Georgia-Russia crisis, leading to the first simultaneous attack on the largest social media sites. Kelly told CNet::

"It was a simultaneous attack across a number of properties targeting him to keep his voice from being heard. We're actively investigating the source of the attacks and we hope to be able to find out the individuals involved in the back end and to take action against them if we can."

Google is quoted as saying:

"We are aware that a handful of non-Google sites were impacted by a DOS attack this morning, and are in contact with some affected companies to help investigate this attack. Google systems prevented substantive impact to our services."

As part of the attack, spam was sent to LiveJournal users that appeared to come from cyxymu.

The claims back up earlier reports in the New York Times that Thursday's attack was sparked by the conflict between Russia and Georgia. The aim was to take down Cyxymu's accounts, particularly the LiveJournal blog where he posted about the crisis. While Google's sites held up to the barrage, Twitter and LiveJournal proved less robust.

While DDoS attacks are notoriously hard to defend against, it's clear that Twitter was far less equipped to cope with such an attack: no doubt they'll be taking a closer look at how such issues could be handled in the future.

iPhone Virus Cured? Apple to Release Security Patch

The security vulnerability that threatened iPhone users via corrupt SMS messages will apparently be addressed by Saturday. An O2 (who carries the iPhone in the UK) spokesperson tells the BBC that Apple is set to release a patch, available in iTunes, that removes the danger.

As we reported yesterday, two researchers presented a way in which iPhones could be remotely controlled – including accessing a phone's address book and camera – after being corrupted by an SMS message containing a single square character.

Although no threat was imminent, the researchers estimated that it would take hackers only a couple weeks to exploit the vulnerability once their findings were made public.

All along, the researchers said the goal of releasing this information was to get an unresponsive Apple to fix the security vulnerability. And for now, it looks like mission accomplished.

Twitter’s 1,928 Percent Growth and Other Notable Social Media Stats

Here's some interesting stats regarding the top 3 social networking sites.

Earlier this month, we looked at some numbers from Web tracking firm Compete, showing the current growth (or lack thereof) at many of the companies we cover. Today, some interesting new stats come our way from Nielsen Online, telling a similar story as Compete, but with a few interesting additions to the story.

Similar to Compete, Nielsen shows huge growth for Twitter and Facebook. According to the firm, Twitter grew a massive 1,928 percent in the US from June '08 to June '09, now reaching a total of 21 million monthly unique visitors. Facebook, which Nielsen recently reported sucks up more time than any other website, leads all social networking sites with 87.3 million unique visitors in June.

MySpace – which HitWise says is losing its grip on music and entertainment – actually showed strong growth at MySpace Music, from 4.2 million to 12.1 million unique visitors year-over-year. According to Nielsen, that makes MySpace Music the third most popular music site on the Web, behind AOL and Yahoo.

A few other interesting stats:

- MySpace leads all social media sites (presumably excluding YouTube) in unique video viewers, with 12.9 million.

- Facebook is quickly growing its video reach – from 2.4 million unique viewers in June '08 to 12 million in June '09.

- Twitter users spent an average of 31 minutes, 17 seconds on the site in June. This excludes users of clients like TweetDeck and Seesmic Desktop.

In all, it's mostly the same story: Facebook and Twitter are both growing extremely fast, while MySpace seems to remain relevant – at least in entertainment and music.

Jakarta Bombings - Twitter User First on the Scene

First the elections and violence in Iran were Twittered across the globe to our computers and cell phones. Today in a deadly turn of terrorist violence, the Indonesian bombings at several hotels in it's capital, Jakarta were Twittered once again before the Associated Press and other media outlets could broadcast it on the local news.

In a turn of events that will surprise no one at this stage, it appears news of the deadly Jakarta bombings early Friday broke first on Twitter.

A report on Australia's ABCNews claims that the above is the first Tweet to come out of the blasts at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel and the J.W. Marriott Hotel, posted by Twitter user Daniel Tumiwa. His series of Tweets reads:

"Bom @ marriot and ritz Carlton kuningan jakarta.

2 boms go off at marriot hotel ad ritz carlton jakarta.

2 boms go off inside Ritz Carlton and Marriott coffee shops! Not kidding. Am here.

Left location. Shocked. Lots of blood. Breakfast meetings at coffee shops while bombs went off.

"Thanks for all the concern. Back home. Safe. Shocked. Bloodsmokeglasseverywhereprayers to the victims."

Meanwhile, Twitpic became a key source of imagery from the event, with Galuh Riyadi posting pics from the scene. And the Marriott Hotel group is using its Twitter account to communicate its sympathies for those affected.

It's remarkable to think that this form of instant news distribution, unheard of 3 years ago, is now commonplace.

Teenager Falls Into Open Manhole While Texting

We're ALL guilty of texting and walking and even crossing the streets without checking the cross walks. This poor girl learned the hidden dangers of walking "under the influence of texting"...lol.

As if you needed more evidence that texting is more dangerous than swine flu, a 15-year-old girl from Staten Island walked into an open manhole while texting. She's fine, don't worry, although she did lose a shoe in the sewer.

Alexa Longueira fell about 4 or 5 feet into an open manhole in Staten Island, scraping up her back and shoulders in the process, although she is otherwise physically unharmed. Her mother noted that she was also mentally injured, as the sewer was "putrid" and one of her shoes remains down there. Apparently, there were some DEP workers on the scene who were "looking" for cones to mark the area when the girl fell in.

The Longueira family says they will sue, although it's not clear exactly who--the city? The cellphone company? Alexa herself, for not watching where she was walking? Regardless, we are all allowed to laugh at this story, at teenagers with their texting, and at Staten Island as a whole, because the girl is unhurt.

Cars and devices could soon be powered by hydrogen extracted from urine

Because it's the universe's most abundant element, hydrogen is a good candidate for a renewable energy source. But there's a problem: the finicky element is difficult to manage. Storing it in its pure form is a hassle that requires high pressure and low temperature, and unbinding it from paired elements used to stabilize it comes with significant secondary energy costs.

Fortunately, though, there's urine to the rescue.

Gerardine Botte, an Ohio University professor, sees the liquid as a solution thanks to the particular composition of its major component, urea. Its make-up, a 2-to-1 ratio of hydrogen and nitrogen, is convenient because hydrogen can be extracted from nitrogen using much less electricity than that needed to, say, pull apart hydrogen and oxygen. (It's a matter of 0.037 Volts versus 1.23 Volts, if you really need to know.)

Botte has recently come up with a nickel-based electrode that can do just that: dip the electrode into urine, apply electrical current, and voila, hydrogen is released. While the research is still in an initial phase, it's possible that urine could power cars, homes, and various devices in as near of a future as six months from now.

How did your collaboration with Louis Vuitton come about?

KW - I already knew and looked up to Marc Jacobs. Then Louis Vuitton called me and said they had this idea for me to do shoes. I was really excited about the opportunity. I don't know if they quite knew what they were getting into asking me to help create something!

How did you work with the teams from Louis Vuitton?

KW- We'd fly out there. They'd have ideas. I'd have ideas and I'd start sketching. I just sketched every idea in my head, women's, men's, everything. In the end Louis Vuitton had to narrow it down because I had SO many ideas that I wanted to get out.

How many sneakers did you design?

KW - Ten, but I would have done more.

What inspires you about Louis Vuitton?

KW - They're the number one fashion house in the world!

What was your image of Louis Vuitton before you became so closely involved with the company, and have your impressions evolved in any way as a result of the collaboration?

KW - They've always been my favourite aspirational brand from the day I bought my first wallet. Actually I used to dream of being able to buy their trunks and put them round my house.

Have your impressions evolved in any way as a result of the collaboration?

KW - Hey, I just love the opportunity of being able to work with people who produce on a certain level.

Why sneakers? (I know you are supposed to own at least 400 pairs)

KW - Because they're a great entry point for people who can't afford the trunk, you know. Also, sneakers, I think, are a way of displaying where you are mentally.

What, for you, makes a great pair of sneakers?

KW - Comfort of course, but also the way they work with different outfits…

What sneakers are you wearing now?

KW - The white boat shoes.

What was your inspiration for this collection?

KW - I was inspired a lot by the movie Dune—remember those big padded collars they wore? Well I did that padded look as a flap at the back.….

So the accent is at the back of the shoe rather than at the front in the 'tongue' ?

KW - Exactly!

How did you choose the colors?

KW - The grey brown and fuschia combination in the Tour model is very much a concept I have for clothing. That juxtaposition of soft and electric palette is something I don't see too often. The exception being Marc Jacobs who has touched on that combination with bags.

Which products are your personal favourites?

KW - The grey boat shoes with pink sole.

And what socks would you wear with those?

KW - Well, that's interesting. I wanted to make a tube sock with an LV patch on the side to go with them.

STYLE AND FASHION

How would you define your style?

KW - An expression of what I'm feeling today.

Do you feel you've got your look 'down' perfectly?

KW - Actually I'm constantly trying to learn what looks good on me. It's kinda hard. It takes a while to really get it, to figure out your style. Most people I know who dress 'A Plus' are 35 and older.

Who is an exception to that rule?

KW - The singer, Rihanna, who is 21. She's kind of like a genius because regardless of how many stylists she has, I know she does it on her own. That's an innate talent, having style like that. It's kind of like the way people play sport, some people just hit the shoots into the net better.

Yeah. Fashion is a sport in a way. Are you a fashion genius?

KW - I don't think I've reached genius level yet. It's good. But its not good enough for me. I want to be better.

So you're saying style-wise, you're a perfectionist?

KW - It's not so much about perfectionism as creativity and needing to constantly evolve.

Do you remember when you first became interested in fashion?

KW - In Kindergarten. I really thought about what I was going to put on every morning.

Who are your fashion icons?

KW - Michael Jackson is the best dressed person of all time. Not today, I can't say that, but in his hey day. When he was wearing all those jackets covered in Swarovski crystals. And then all those leather jackets and Mickey Mouse t-shirts and those tailored pants and penny loafers. Michael Jackson, he was for real.

What is your best fashion memory?

KW - Getting dressed up to play. If I played football I wanted to put on the whole football outfit. If I wanted to play cops and robbers I had to put on the full cops and robbers outfit. I loved costumes.

What is your favourite item in your wardrobe?

KW - My vintage Levi's jeans jacket. It's the perfect, perfect jacket. Someone told me it was really, really good because it's got the big 'E' on the label, which means it's from a certain year.

What are you wearing right now?

KW - A Schott jacket. It had silver zippers but I had them put plastic ones instead. An old jacket with plastic zippers, it's a kind of Japanese toy vibe thing.

What do you think is different about French and American attitudes to fashion?

KW - Well, I notice if you're in the 'hood' in Paris, you dress in a hoodie like they do back home. I love that, that the look is straight out of America. Because it wasn't always that way.

How do you find the ideas for your music?

KW - I get inspired by concepts, theories, philosophies.

Give me an example.

KW - The saying 'What Does Not Kill Me Makes Me Stronger' was an inspiration for the song Stronger.

That's from the philosopher Frederick Neitzche!

KW - Exactly.

If you hadn't been a successful Music artist, what would you have liked to be?

KW - An author, maybe. Although I have already written a book.

What is it called?

KW - Thank You And You're Welcome.

What's it about?

KW - It's basically a manual to show you how to make every part of your life into a 'thank you and you're welcome' moment. People say it's a little like the book, The Secret.

Give me one piece of advice from the book?

KW - Well, my axiom 'Get used to being used'. People have such negative connotations about the word 'Use'. To use is necessary. If you can't use or be used you're useless.

It's like, You use me?

KW - Yeah, well I'm glad to be of use.

Who has been the biggest influence on your career?

KW - Me! Meaning my mistakes, I've learnt so much from them!

Oh, so you admit you make mistakes! You have a reputation for having a pretty high opinion of yourself…

KW - It's true I am super confident and delusionally egotistical but believe me, I have conflicts with myself at night; like, damn, will I be able to make stuff that I like; will I be able to make stuff which will make an impact on the world?

What projects are you working on at present?

KW - I'm in the middle of doing a video with Jared Leto and his band 30 Seconds To Mars. I'm doing a video with the photographer Stephen Klein called 'Say You Will'. I'm also shooting a video with the director Spike Jonze. Oh and this morning I worked on the video for my song Robocop. My girlfriend got her whole body moulded in prosthetics so she could play a Barbie doll in it. They made the exact shape of her breasts, but with no nipples, just like Barbie…..

How would you describe the experience of Paris / France?

KW - Y'know, when I first went to Paris I used to HATE it. Now it's one of my favourite cities in the world. I compare Paris to a girl that you meet at a bar who is very rude to you, who you end up falling in love with.

What do you like most about the city?

KW - I like the heritage, the attitude. The vibe I get from Parisiens is highly educated, highly cultured and very impatient. And I'm into that. Paris forces you to step up your game. It forces you NOT to be ignorant about things.

What do you like least?

KW - Nothing. I like it so much I may move there. They used to say if you could make it in New York you could make it anywhere. Well, if you can make it in Paris you can ANNIHILATE the world.

Are you a tough person to work for?

KW - In the beginning I didn't know how to get respect in a civil manner. I didn't know you didn't have to scream and jump up and down. I don't have to be like that now.

Where is your office?

KW - For me, the world is my office.

How do you take criticism? There are plenty of people, I notice, who like to criticize you on your blog, kanyewestunivercity.com.

KW - Well, you have to figure out why people say those things. Like, were they having a bad day or something? Actually, I think it's kind of fabulous, people saying stuff like Kanye, you're a faggot, or Kanye, he doesn't take himself too seriously. That's a great blog comment! Because of course I'm taking myself WAY too seriously.

Greatest world leader?

KW - Obama.

If you could label your style what would it be?

KW - Ah, that's the thing. Everyone wants to put people in supermarket aisles! The thing is when you do that with people, they just all kind of crash into each other while walking down them. It's like when I first started making music in high school people couldn't really describe how I dressed until the worked hip hop was invented. Then they were OK about it. I guess you could say I wear a lot of cultural coats, but I'm more than any label anyone puts on me.

Still. What's it like being such a fashion icon? Kids of eleven want to dress like you...

KW - Well, you do have this ability, when you are famous, to set trends just by being photographed and that's really not fair. I shouldn't get any more credit than the next person for, say, bringing back those Linda Farrow flying shades, I just happened to be wearing the aviators that to me were the most 'normal'. That doesn't make me a fashion icon though. People who have TERRIBLE style have the ability to set trends.

How do you deal with your fame?

KW - I deal with it by realizing I'm kind of confined in my walking TV show. Sometimes I feel like I'm an animal at the zoo, with everybody the other side of the glass wanting to see the monkey overreact. It's a little like being in a cell, but what's good about living in a cell is I have cellmates. Jay-Z, he's definitely in my cellblock.

KW -I'm at war with myself. I know I am in danger of cannibalizing myself, of talking about myself to death. My whole life for the past five years has been all about me.

KW - Well, there's nothing more I could do with my life right now than to make it about helping other people.

What are your goals, then?

KW - If it's the last thing I do, I want to drop all the bravado that most urban rap artists carry. I want to make new good stuff and not brag about it. Just to do it. One of the other things I'm going to do is to take my next fee—I charge at least $100,000 a verse—and donate it to my charity (the Dr Donda West foundation he started up with his late mother to combat high school drop out rates).

KW - Actually, I don't think I'm number one at anything…except for learning.

KW - I think so. You can never stop learning. Like my grandfather who is 90 and just took a painting class.

A reminder: today is the due date for Facebook to switch on Facebook URLs for pages with less than 1000 fans: in other words, almost all Facebook pages will be able to set up facebook.com/yourbrandhere.
One restriction has been added, however: you now need to have more than 25 fans.

The Facebook help section reads:

Your Facebook Page must meet two requirements: it must have been live on Facebook prior to the May 31, 2009 cut-off date and have had a minimum 1,000 fans at that time.

This limitation is temporary. All Pages created after May 31, 2009 or that had less than 1,000 fans on that day will be eligible to claim usernames on Sunday, June 28, 2009 if they have more than 25 fans.

Tonight at 11.59pm EDT, Facebook also turns on Facebook usernames for those who joined Facebook after 3 p.m. (EDT) on June 9, 2009 - the time the feature was announced. It's probable that smaller Facebook Pages will have the feature enabled at the same time.

WARNING: Fake Twitter Invites Carry Malicious Worm

Security sites are warning web users to beware fake Twitter invites in their email inboxes. The reports, based on an alert on Wednesday from Symantec, say the emailed invites come with a malicious attachment which, if downloaded, harvests email addresses from your computer and copies itself to removable drives and shared folders.

The emails carry the subject line "Your friend invited you to twitter!", while the sender's address is spoofed as "invitations@twitter.com". Unlike a typical Twitter invite, however, the email contains no invitation link: instead it carries the attached file Invitation Card.zip, tempting the receiver to download it. The attachment, of course, contains W32.Ackantta.B@mm – a nasty, email address-harvesting worm.

Twitter Spam = Mainstream Recognition Unlike previous, resolved "Twitter worms" (eg. Mikeyy), this one has nothing to do with Twitter: it doesn't spread via the Twitter.com website or even target Twitter users specifically. Rather, it seems that Twitter has reached the mainstream appeal required to make it a worthy topic for email scams. A good proportion of web users, the spammers must assume, will have heard of Twitter and therefore might download the attachment.

If you receive one of these mails, simply mark it as spam without downloading the attachment. And if you think you might be infected, update your anti-virus software and run a full virus scan.

BERLIN (AP) -- Its past midnight in downtown Berlin, and the prostitutes pace in front of the Hackescher Markts stores.

Signs of a slow economy are everywhere -- a sportswear store offers 40 percent markdowns, and bars advertise discounted drinks.

Like so many other businesses, Europes largest legalized prostitution industry is having to adapt to the economic downturn. Customers are fewer or more frugal, competition has increased, and more clubs and brothels are offering discounts to drum up business.

Since late 2008, the number of English and American tourists has dropped and the street dynamic has changed, according to one prostitute in her mid-20s who requested anonymity because she did not want her family to know her profession. She still gets customers, she said, but they no longer pay for the extras.

"We have to be a lot more aggressive now," said the woman, wearing pink jeans and a black corset, who has worked the area for three years. "The customers used to come straight to you. Now they dont ask you as much."

Nevertheless, she said, the prostitutes in the area have been sticking to a set minimum price -- about euro80 ($110) for sex.

"If he doesnt pay our prices then he cant go home with me," she said, putting her hands on her hips. "That simple."

Prostitution is legal in Germany, with the same rights and benefits as other professions, such as health and unemployment insurance. There are about 450,000 prostitutes nationwide, according to 2008 numbers, with 10,000 in Berlin. Streetwalkers like those in the Hackescher Markt make up only about 3 percent, with the remaining 97 percent working in brothels, massage parlors or out of private residences.

Though the demand for prostitutes services remains strong, the supply has increased as more people lose their jobs and turn to the profession, said Marion Detlefs, of the German prostitution advocacy group Hydra. The result is increased competition, she said.

In response, clubs and brothels are increasingly marketing themselves either as high-class, exclusive spas, or as bargain basements of delight.

The capitals biggest bordello, Artemis, is one of the former, with a wide variety of attractions. For an entry fee of euro80, guests gain access to a gym, free buffet, a pool and two erotic cinemas. The sex costs extra -- euro60 ($83) for 30 minutes, with set prices for a menagerie of other sexual services. On any given day, the bordello has 60 to 90 women working, said manager Vanessa Rahn.

Jenna, 30, a soft-spoken bottle blonde who works there, left a job in hotel hospitality to become a prostitute two years ago.

"It wasnt a very fun job, and I wanted to try something more interesting and fun," she said, requesting that her last name not be used.

Jenna said she hasnt seen a decrease in the number of her daily customers -- usually about 10 men -- but they have grown increasingly frugal. She also noted a drop in businessmen customers as fewer attend meetings at a nearby conference center.

"This is what the girls have been complaining about," Rahn said. "The number of customers is pretty much the same, but men only go once or twice to rooms, not three or four times, like before."

However, Artemis is working hard at bringing in customers through incentives such as discount cards and lowered prices for taxi drivers and senior citizens. The incentives have meant an increase in the number of regular customers, Rahn said.

At the other end of the spectrum is Berlins Pussy Club bordello, which has branches in Heidelberg and Wuppertal.
It opened in mid-2008 with a focus on the discount-minded customer, offering an "all you can sex" flat-rate. For between euro70 and euro100, depending upon the time of day, customers can enjoy any sexual services with an unlimited number of women. For their work, the women are also paid a flat-rate wage.

"All the girls get a daily wage of euro100 to euro250 ($140 to $347), so they dont have to worry about money, which is good in this working atmosphere," manager Patricia Floreiou said in an e-mailed reply to questions. She noted a steady increase in applications since the Pussy Clubs opening, attributing this in part to the bordellos flat-rate salary.

"Many women in other clubs arent earning enough anymore, and we offer steady, secure money."
Floreiou said the pricing structure has helped the bordello avoid any problems, despite the global market downturn, and that the number of customers has not gone down.

Back in Hackescher Markt, the American-German prostitute said she was thinking of a change in location, as she bent down to retie the laces on knee-high black patent leather boots with five-inch platform heels. She is planning to head soon to the U.S. to work in East Coast strip clubs, saying there was still ample work there, as well.

"I make more in one night just dancing than on the streets here," she said.

Artemis Jenna, meanwhile, said she will eventually return to the quieter life working for hotels, but that she is in no rush to leave the high pay and dependability of prostitution.

"This type of job will always be in existence," she said. "People will always have money for fun."

STOCKHOLM -- Swedish fashion retailer Hennes & Mauritz AB on Wednesday unveiled the name of its next designer collection team-up: British accessory brand Jimmy Choo.

H&M said the famed shoemaker -- one of the favorite pump labels of "Sex & the City" character "Carrie" -- will launch the collection in 200 H&M stores on Nov. 14, including covetable shoes and bags as well as a women's clothing line to match them. Jimmy Choo will also provide a men's collection of shoes, bags and accessories. "We adore Jimmy Choo's shoes and bags," H&M's Creative Designer Margareta van den Bosch said, adding it was the first time the company has collaborated with an accessory brand. They say that cheap shoes will ruin even the most well assembled outfit, but Jimmy Choo is out to disprove that maxim this Fall. On November 14th, H&M will release its latest collaboration collection with the luxury shoe label in only 200 stores (several of which are likely to be in Manhattan). The collection will include shoes, bags and accessories for men and women as well as clothing, a category the brand is neither known for nor, as far as we know, has ever produced at all.

Like Matthew Williamson, whose recent H&M collaboration includes his first menswear, Jimmy Choo appears to be using H&M to test the waters for potential product expansions. More importantly, we will all be looking to see if H&M will be able to successfully translate Choo's opulent designs at what will have to be a dramatically lower price point.

MySpace Slashes 30% of Staff: Is the End Near?

Its influence and sheer size in the industry has created many new spin offs looking to do the same. Who knows...perhaps the deep layoffs by MySpace will spawn new sites from the insiders themselves.

MySpace, once the undisputed leader in social networking and the most popular topic on Mashable, announced it is cutting nearly 30% of its staff today. The announcement is no surprise: not only has the struggling social network lost its lead to Facebook, but its $300 million/year advertising deal with Google ends next year, with Google unlikely to renew at the same price. The cuts bring MySpace down to 1000 US employees; rival Facebook has 850.

In a statement, MySpace CEO Owen Van Natta explained that the company was bloated and inefficient:Simply put, our staffing levels were bloated and hindered our ability to be an efficient and nimble team-oriented company…I understand that these changes are painful for many. They are also necessary for the long-term health and culture of MySpace.

Our intent is to return to an environment of innovation that is centered on our user and our product.Jonathan Miller, MySpace parent company News Corp.'s chief executive of Digital Media, added:MySpace grew too big considering the realities of today's marketplace. I believe this restructuring will help MySpace operate much more effectively both structurally and financially moving forward.

I am confident in MySpace's next phase under the leadership of Owen and his team. MySpace's slow decline is no longer news, but leads us to ask: is it reversible?

Kelis claims estranged hubby Nas has left her high and dry ... not offering her a penny in the wake of her impending birth ... and she says she's broke -- "I have run out of money." Kelis filed legal papers claiming Nas isn't paying her support, pre-natal expenses -- nothing, even though she claims he is filthy rich. Kelis is asking the judge to order Nas to pay spousal support, child support, all pregnancy-related expenses, and one-half of all medical expenses after the child is born. She also wants $3,500 for the baby nurse after the child's birth, and $20,000 for strollers, cribs and other baby supplies. Kelis says, "My survival is based on [Nas'] will at this time. If he does not want to pay for an expense, it does not get paid." The couple was married in 2003. The baby is due this month.
